My work explores the primitive and mysterious act of creativity. Stripping away all the trappings of the modern world, I return to the basic element of fire, earth, water, and air. I am fascinated with and inspired by the pottery of the indigenous people of the Americas. Simple shapes and unglazed surfaces colored only with clay and fire are ancient. In juxtaposition to the controlled rounded form, my firing process is chaotic and uncontrolled, the resulting patterns created by fire. I love that. Random smoke markings enhance and enrich the burnished surface. With so many unpredictable variables in their making, each vessel achieves a uniqueness that is impossible to duplicate.
