Peter O´Shaughnessy

Vesuvius, VA | In Memoriam

Artist Statement: Peter O’Shaughnessy is a craftsman working in forged iron. His art reflects his search for a balance between function and form. Using traditional blacksmithing techniques, Peter has produced pieces of his own design since 1972. His work is utilitarian and is aesthetically at home in any setting. Peter lives and works in Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Building on the tradition of his craft and locale, he goes on to creatively explore the potential of the iron. Each piece is individually handmade. The process begins by heating the iron on a coal forge until red-hot. It is then pounded on the anvil and shaped to the desired form. Peter’s work retains the grace of apparent fluidity long after the iron has hardened to its lasting strength. The pieces are finished with linseed oil and beeswax; with occasional application of natural oil maintain the finish.
