One Year After Hurricane Helene: Supporting Artists in Recovery
It has been one year since Hurricane Helene devastated communities across our region. The storm left lasting impacts on so many lives, and among those deeply affected were dozens of Piedmont Craftsmen artists. Homes and studios were destroyed, materials and tools were lost, and many livelihoods were disrupted.
Recovery takes time — and for artists, rebuilding a studio or replacing specialized equipment is a long and expensive journey. Even a year later, many artists are still working toward stability. We honor their resilience and creativity as they continue to rebuild, and we remain committed to supporting them in every way we can.
One of the most meaningful ways to help is by shopping directly from artists. When you purchase handmade work, you are not just buying an object — you are helping an artist rebuild their life, studio, and future. Explore the work of our Appalachian artists HERE
If you’d like to contribute beyond shopping, the following organizations continue to provide direct aid and resources to artists and communities still recovering from Helene:
- River Arts District – Donate or shop directly from artists most affected.
- NC Arts Disaster Relief Fund – Supporting artists and arts organizations across North Carolina.
- CERF+ (Craft Emergency Relief Fund) – Providing emergency relief to craft artists in crisis.
- Craft Futures Fund – Emergency relief grants to support artists and communities in WNC.
- Southern Highland Craft Guild: Disaster Relief – Helping restore historic spaces and support regional artists.
- American Red Cross – Disaster relief across impacted communities.
- FEMA – Ongoing resources for recovery.
- United Way – Providing broad community support.
- Local Food Banks – Essential for families still in need.
As we reflect on this anniversary, let us continue to stand together. Your support — whether through donations, shopping handmade, or spreading awareness — helps artists rebuild and ensures that our vibrant craft community will not only recover but thrive once again.
Together, we can keep creativity alive and help heal our community.
