Pattern, Dye and Clay
05/03/19 - 05/31/19
This month’s exhibition features work by fiber artist Margaret Agner and ceramic artist Kristin Schoonover. The exhibit is free to attend and will be on display from May 3rd – 31st.
Kristin works in white stoneware, creating thrown and altered functional pieces. She colors them with mason stain and glaze, using masking and scribing techniques in striped and gridded patterns, giving the work a light contemporary graphic feel.
Margaret does a complex form of silk painting she developed in the 1990s. The textures she creates are close to nature yet form an abstracted version of whatever species she is portraying. Her initial loose underpainting dictates and inspires the rest of the composition and layers. The subsequent layers of dying, steaming, painting, resist drawings and outline painting can take over a week between curing and drying. The works in this show focus on butterflies and moths.
