I hand and machine-work American and exotic hardwood into functional pieces that reveal color and grain. I often cut, polish and add striking rocks, burls, or seeds found on our adventures.
When I first acquire a piece of lumber, I have no idea of what I will do with it. As I run my hands across its grain or hold it up to other woods, images begin to appear in my mind.
These images flow from a visual library in my mind of everything I have ever seen that excites me. I then mentally sketch one possibility after another until a strong concept emerges. I finally begin to work the wood, but even then, I do not know how I will finish. I do know that my functional creation must be intentional in its design, sound in its structure and feel right in my heart. Everything else evolves from that.
