Rachel Nicholson works experimentally to develop new twists on ancient traditional felting techniques. She feels challenged to create works that fit within a contemporary environment and venture beyond the strong ethnic heritage that often accompanies the medium. Because the process is determined by the innate qualities of the wool fiver, it is difficult to control the finished product. She works with a large palette, mixing and blending her fleece much like a painter.
