Janet Graven Tourtellot
Charlotte, NC | In Memoriam
Artist Statement: Born in Charlotte, I lived and was educated in Charlotte and Long Island. I had no formal art training, but was encouraged by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg art instructor who was over all the city schools. I began painting folk art in 1964, under the encouragement of Mrs. Esten Bohannon. Also encouraged by Margaret and Guy Chesick, I applied for membership into the Piedmont Crafts Guild in 1968 and was accepted that year. Since that time I have painted over a thousand items, more usually than not by commission on a client’s antique pieces. A favorite was matching an unpainted antique chest to a very old antique painted trunk.
